A couple of days ago we were learning about George Washington at Valley Forge for homeschool.  We talked about how it was one of the coldest winters ever, and that the soldiers were living in tents and huts. They couldn't afford to buy food, all they had to eat was half cooked fire cakes (flour, salt, and water) all winter.  We talked about how the soldiers started to leave because they were sick of their situation.  Other soldiers wanted to leave as well.  As they were doing so they came upon George Washington praying out loud. His prayer was so sincere, heartfelt, and full of faith.  The men decided that they would stay and stick it out.  Then the other soldiers came back when it started to warm back up.  How we won the war.

It was such a good lesson.  One that I had forgotten about.  I had no idea that all they had to eat were fire cakes.  The girls and I made some half cooked fire cakes. They were disgusting!  That's what I thought.  I thought the girls would think the same thing, but oh no they loved them.  I couldn't handle the texture, and blah flavor.  I wanted to puke.  I think they would have been better if they were fully cooked, with syrup, or honey on them.

This lesson really made me grateful to have a warm shelter over my head, lot's of blankets, a furnace.  I'm thankful that we have electricity. I'm thankful that we have money to buy a variety of food.  I'm thankful that we have toppings to put on our pancakes.  We have it so much better than a lot of people, and for that I'm thankful.

Yum half cooked fire cakes:
